Learn about Marie Selby
Born in 1885, Marie Selby (nee Minshall) grew up to be an accomplished musician in Ohio. Not long after finishing her music studies, Marie met her soon-to-be husband, William (Bill) Selby. Together they decided to join the throng of people engaging in the first cross-country automobile races, making Marie Selby one of the first women to accomplish this feat.
Enamored with the Sarasota area before he met his wife, Bill Selby eventually took Marie to Florida’s west coast and bought seven acres of land. It’s here where Marie Selby landscaped a gorgeous wall of blooming flowers that bordered the Gulf Coast to the tip of the peninsula. Her planting plans also heavily featured roses and a row of bamboo to block out the view of a nearby condominium. A charter member of the first Sarasota garden club, Marie Selby requested that, upon her demise, they turn her work into a community botanical garden “for the enjoyment of the general public.”
